James "Windy" Wingrove


Taking Part in a special helicopter airlift in the Hawaiian Islands are three Manning Marines. Members of the 9th Marine Regiment they are: Pvt. Donald L. Lerssen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lerssen; Pvt. James R. Wingrove, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Wingrove; and Pvt. Arthur F. Zerwas.

Five Manning Youths Finish Basic Training
Donald Lerssen, James Wingrove, Jack Wagner, Art Zerwas, and Jack Mohr, Manning boys who enlisted in the Marine Corps together have completed basic training at San Diego. California. They are now spending leaves in their homes here. All except Mohr will report for foreign duty at Camp Pendleton, California. He will report at another California camp.

James Wingrove, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wingrove, suffered serious head cuts when the bicycle he was riding crashed into a car driven by Andrew Overgaard. The accident happened Friday night on a country road near the boy's home. The bicycle struck the side of the car and his head struck the glass door. He has been taken to the Carroll Hospital for treatment.

Three Youths Injured
James Wingrove 18, and William Hargens, 15, both of Manning and James Buckley of Garnett, Kansas, have been released from St. Anthony Hospital here following treatment for minor injuries. The youths were hurt when their car hit a concrete bridge on highway 71 south of Carroll. Wingrove, driver of the auto, said he was blinded by the lights of approaching cars.

Manning Marines Leave For Japan
Four Manning men, who joined the Marines together last spring, have left for duty in Japan.
They are Jack Wagner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Wagner; Don Lerssen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lerssen; Art Zerwas, son of and Mrs. Dick Zerwas; James Wingrove, son of Mr. Mrs. Dan Wingrove.
Jack Mohr, son of Mr. Mrs. Jack Mohr, who joined Marine at the same time, returned to Santa Ana, California, following a holiday visit here.

Get Transfers
Four Manning men, who joined the Marines men, tether and have been stationed in Japan have been transferred. Don Lerssen, Artie Zerwas, and James Wingrove have been transferred to Hawaii. Jack Wagner is now in Okinawa.

James Robert Wingrove
James R. Wingrove, 48, 204 Redbud Lane, died Wednesday, August 5, 1981, at a local hospital after a brief illness.

Born in 1933, son of Daniel and Ann (Retchie) Wingrove, he was a native of Dow City and had resided 24 years in Council Bluffs. He was employed as a freezer maintenance man at Campbell Soup Company in Omaha.

Wingrove graduated in 1953 from Manning High School and was a Marine Veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughter, Cheryl Stifle; son, Michael, and granddaughter, Tina Stifle, all of Council Bluffs.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Beem-Belford Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Robert Schoemann, pastor of Queen of Apostles Church will officiate. Burial will be at a Dow City Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
