Two Manning Soldiers With Similar Service Records Are Released
Two Manning boys who have seen a great deal of service overseas returned to Manning together Tuesday night. They came to the States on the same ship and both have received honorable discharges from the army.
They are Staff Sergeant. James Albert, son of Mrs. John Campbell, and Sergeant John Weible, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Weible and husband of the former Helen Kuhn of Manning.
Albert has served with the Second Armored Division, Company C., Maintenance Battalion. He has been overseas for two years and nine months having seen service at Casablanca, Africa, Sicily, England, Normandy, Holland, Belgium and Germany. He has been in the Army four years and seven months.
Weible served overseas two months longer than Albert having served in practically the same theaters, including Anzio Beachhead. He was not in England, however. Sgt. Weible's wife has been making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kuhn, and has been teaching rural school.

Manning Monitor article ------ 1943

Cpl. Weible In Sicily
Sicily, October 3 Dear Legion Members and Monitor: Just received my Monitor today and have already read it from start to finish it was a little old but that makes no difference for its news from home.
This issue carried letters from Donald Struve and Jimmy Albert which were interesting. Incidentally had the good fortune of seeing Jimmy while in Africa.
We had a short but very nice visit. He is the first home-town friend I have seen since being overseas.

What I can tell you about what I have seen would be too little to start on so will save it. I am in good health so far so have little to complain about. We have athletic equipment which we use when not too busy. We also have a movie once in awhile.
Want to thank the Legion members and Monitor for the paper and send greetings to all friends around Manning.
Sincerely yours,
Cpl. John M. Weible

John Weible
Manning Monitor
October 14, 2004

Funeral Service for John Melville Weible was held Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Interment service was at 1:30 p.m. at the Manning Cemetery, with full military honors.

John, son of John and Helena Weible, was born March 11, 1914 in Audubon County, Iowa. He was baptized in September of 1933, and confirmed into the Lutheran Church while overseas, May 3rd, 1943.

He married Helen Marie Kuhn on April 11th, 1942, in Omaha before going off to war. Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Kent, Joel of Omaha, and Tim of Ames; five grandchildren, Wendy Steffes of Des Moines, Jonathan of Bettendorf, Jessica Keane of Hawaii, Laura, and Evan Kent; three great-grandchildren, Emma, Isabel, and Aidan Steffes.

John was our family patriarch. He quietly led us by examples of hard work, dedication to family, and closeness to God. He was never one to "toot his own horn". He was awarded a Bronze Star for Valor in WWII, but would only say when asked that "he did his job". After the war, John and Helen farmed for 19 years south of Manning, Iowa, until allergies forced a change in career. He became a branch plan manager for Nelson Manufacturing from 1964 until his retirement in 1973. He was continually active in his church, and public service with Manning Rotary and City Council.

John was his wife's loving caregiver as she battled cancer for 14 years, and became her hospice at home for her last two years before her death in 1994. John's strong constitution helped him carry on independently until age 88, until diabetes complications prompted a move to Walnut Grove Senior Center in Omaha. This spring at Walnut Grove, he was the guest of honor at his 90th birthday party, where many family members came to celebrate his life. John passed quietly on October 1, 2004.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Helen, a son Kent in 1966, his parents, brother Leroy, sisters Alice, Rose Marie and Dorothy.

He is survived by his two sons, Joel and Tim, a brother Danny of Melbourne, Florida, and a sister Fay of Los Angeles, California.

John Weible is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
