Wayne entered the service August 21, 1943, and took pre-flight school at the U.S. Navy Flight Preparatory school at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He was assigned to the Training Command Radio School at the Sioux Falls Army Air Field, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for training as a radio operator-mechanic. After completing this twenty-week course, he was transferred to gunnery school at Yuma, Arizona. He was then stationed at Davis-Monthan Field, Tucson, Arizona, where he was assigned to combat duty in the European Theater of Operations in February 1945. Wayne was transferred to the Eighth Air Force Liberator Station, England, joining the 467th Bomb Group where he flew and fought as a radio operator-gunner on one of the B-24 Liberator bombers. The 467th Bomb Group was part of Lieutenant General William E. Kepner's 8th Air Force 2nd Bomb Division. TSGT Schrum was discharged in 1945.

Wayne Schrum writes that he likes preflight school and has made all the requirements and ranks 4th in some studies.

Wayne & Art Schrum are sons of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Schrum --- recently wrote home.
Art was formerly Yeoman 1st class, and now has rank of Chief. He is still on convoy duty.

They enjoy getting the Monitor and send thanks to the Legion and the office for the paper.

Wayne Schrum In Pre-Flight
Wayne "Pedro" Schrum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Schrum, is now stationed at the pre-flight school at Cornell college, Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He writes expressing his thanks for the Monitor through the Legion and this office. He says he looks forward to getting it each week to follow the news, particularly the Bulldog basketball team, of which his brother Lyle "Junior" Schrum is a member.

He adds that he likes his work fine although he is kept busy every minute and must work hard.

"It really takes a lot of chow to feed us," he writes, "but the food is swell!"
Wayne will probably be at Mt. Vernon about two months more.


Wayne Schrum Naval Cadet
Wayne F. Schrum, Manning, was one of 200 naval aviation cadets who left Kansas City for the United States Navy Flight Preparatory school at Cornell college, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, last week.
At Cornell college for 12 weeks he will study mathematics, physics navigation and other ground school subjects, undergo physical conditioning and engage in military drill.

At the conclusion of the course he will be ordered to a Civil Aeronautics Authority-War Training Service school for flight instruction and additional ground school work. He will then proceed to one of the five United States Navy Pre-Flight schools for 12 weeks of physical conditioning and instruction in naval essentials before beginning primary flight training at a United States Naval Reserve Air Base.
Ultimately he will be commissioned an ensign in the Naval Reserve or a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve.

Wayne Schrum At Radio School
Pvt. Wayne Schrum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. F. Schrum of Manning, has been assigned to the AAF Training Command Radio School at the Sioux Falls Army Air Field, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for training as a radio operator-mechanic.
Upon completion of a 20-week course, he will be fully trained as a member of a highly skilled bomber crew of the Army Air Forces.
Wayne was active in high school athletics and graduated from Manning High in 1940.

Will Be Radio Operator-Gunner
An Eighth Air Force Liberator Station, England. Corporal Wayne F. Schrum of Manning, Iowa, recently joined the 467th Bomb Group to fly and fight as radio operator-gunner on one of the B-24 Liberator bombers of this group.
After completing an operational training course, Cpl. Schrum will be assigned to fly on bombing missions to Germany and enemy occupied Europe.

Prior to entering the service Aug. 21, 1943, Cpl. Schrum was employed by the Hutchinson lee Cream Co. He is a former student of Iowa State college. Recently stationed at Davis-Monthan Field, Tuscon. Ariz., he was assigned to combat duty in the European theatre of operations in Feb., 1945.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William F. Schrum, live at 1004 Elm street, Manning.


Wayne Schrum Promoted
An Eighth Air Force Liberator, Station, England. The promotion of Wayne E. Schrum, of 1004 Elm street, Manning, from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant was announced recently by Col. Albert J. Shower, commanding officer of the 467th Bomb Group.

Now serving as radio operator gunner on a B-24 Liberator of this Eighth Air Force group, Sgt. Schrum entered the Army on Aug 121, 1943. He is a former student of Manning high school and Iowa State college.
The 467th Bomb Group is part o Major General William E. Kepner Second Air Division.

The promotion of Wayne F. Schrum of 1004 Elm street, Manning, from staff sergeant to technical sergeant was announced recently by Col. Albert J. Shower, commanding officer of the 467th Bomb Group.

Now serving as a radio operator on a B-24 Liberator bomber of this Eighth Air Force group, T/Sgt. Schrum was employed by Hutchinson Ice Cream Co. before entering the service in August, 1943. He was assigned to overseas duty in February, 1945. Prior to his employment he was a student at Iowa State college. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Schrum are living at the same address as above.
The 467th Bomb Group is part of Major General William E. Kepner's Second Air Division.


Wayne F. Schrum

Wayne "Pedro" F. Schrum, 90 of Iowa City died Tuesday, November 20, 2012, under the compassionate care of Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 24, 2012, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, with entombment to follow at the Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Wayne's memory to Iowa River Hospice of Marshalltown, Iowa 50158.

Wayne was born July 3, 1922, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of William and Ruby (Addison) Schrum. His family moved to Iowa where they resided in Manning and here he graduated from high school.

During WWII he served in the United States Army Air Corps. On February 7, 1948, he married Anna M. Hughes in Iowa City. The couple made their home in here for many years where Wayne worked for Moore Business Forms for many of those years. In 2004, a couple years following Ann's death, Wayne moved to California where he found an old friend, Marilyn Becker and for the next 7 years enjoyed her company and her family while living there. He returned to Iowa settling in Marshalltown to be near his son and his family. Here he lived at the Ember's Senior Living Center enjoying many new friendships.

He had been a member of the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, the American Legion, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

His family includes his two sons, Larry and his wife, Barbara of Marshalltown; and Doug Schrum of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Jacob Schrum (Elena), Elizabeth Schrum, and Ethan Schrum and his two brothers, Burton Schrum (Betty) of Norton, Kansas; and Lyle Schrum of Urbandale, Iowa.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ann; a brother, Art; and two siblings as children.
