Paul Volquartsen, 26, 111 Main street, Manning, is receiving his initial Naval indoctrination at the U. S, Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Ill.
His recruit training consists of instruction in seamanship, military, drill, and general Navy procedure.
During this period a series of aptitude tests will be taken by the recruit to determine whether he will be assigned to a Naval Service School or to immediate duty at sea.
When his recruit training is completed, he will receive a period of leave.

Paul Volquartsen writes from the Naval Air Technical Training Center at Memphis, Tenn., that he is receiving the Monitor and expresses his thanks to the Legion and the Monitor staff.

A man whose entire working career has been connected with the food industry is our subject this week, Paul Volquartsen, 41 was born at Dow City and educated at Manning where he has resided 28 years.

While still in high school. Paul worked in three grocery stores and upon graduation was employed by Cohn & Peltz. He soon went to work for Thrifty Food for three Years and then to Manning Creamery for three.

During World War II he served in the navy for 23 months returning to Thrifty. During the last 10 years there he hard his own meat department. In September 1959 he moved his business to the A & G Food Market.

Paul and his wife, Dorothy have two children, Thomas Paul, 11, who will be in the sixth grade, and Beth Ann, five will start Kindergarten here this fall.

The family belongs to Sacred Heart church and Paul is a member of Holy Name Society, Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion. He lists as hobbles, working around the house.

Mass of the Christian burial for Paul Volquartsen was held Monday, February 15, 1993 at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Father Ralph Reinhart served as celebrant with music provided by the Sacred Heart Choir.
Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Manning, Iowa, with Steve McGrane, Jim Williams, Lester Ohde, Tom Seidl, Laverne Olson and Ed Reischl as casketbearers. Prayer service was held Sunday, February 14, 1993 at 7:30 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa.
Military honors were provided by Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, both of Manning. Paul, son of Bernard and Anna Neethan Volquartsen, was born December 31, 1917 at Dow City, Iowa. He attended school in Dow City. The family moved to Manning when he was a boy and he finished his schooling here. On January 23, 1940 Paul was united in marriage with Dorothy Rowedder. They settled in Manning.

During World War II Paul served with the United State Navy.

Paul was a meat cutter in Manning for many years and later operated the Sav-Mor Grocery Store. Before his retirement in 1981 Paul worked in Carroll for Farmland Foods for 10 years. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Parish and the American Legion. Paul had been in relatively good health until last fall. He was hospitalized this winter and died on Thursday afternoon, February 11, 1993 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 75 years, 1 month, and 11 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers, Carl and Bill Volquartsen; and by four sisters: Hilda Hammer, Emma Cramer, Ella Clothier, and Ann Jensen.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Manning; his son, Tom Volquartsen and his wife, Linda, of Carroll; his daughter, Beth and her husband, Mike Troutman, of Dedham; seven grandchildren; a brother, Henry Volquartsen, of Dunlap; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


Paul Volquartsen is buried in the Manning Catholic Cemetery.
