Virgil was inducted into the U.S. Army in October of 1951, taking his basic training and Carpenter School basic training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He went to Fairbanks, Alaska, with the 21st Engineers, and was later stationed at Fort Ladd (now known as Fort Wainwright) which is east of Fairbanks and served there before Alaska was a state. He was transferred to Camp Carson, Colorado, where he worked in the personnel office. Sergeant Rowedder was discharged in 1953.

Funeral services for Virgil Rowedder were held Friday, April 20, 1984, 2:00 p.m., at the Ohde Funeral Home, Manning Iowa with Reverend John Cornish of the Manning United Methodist Church officiating. Music was provided by Becky Zubrod with Joann Karsten as accompanist. Interment was at the Manning City Cemetery with casketbearers Ken Stripling, Lowell Stribe, Ross Norman, Ray Eich, Chuck Hughes, and Darrell Snyder. Honorary casket-bearers were Frank Handlos, Laverne Deen, Ken Dethlefs, Leon Muhlbauer, Steve Nuckels, and Leland Bender. Military honors were presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 3517 and the American Legion, Emil Ewoldt Post No. 22, both of Manning, Iowa.

Virgil, son on John and Ella Mordhorst Rowedder, was born September 25, 1929, at Manning, Iowa. He graduated from Manning High School in 1948.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army on October 16, 1951, and served in the Corps of Engineers. Virgil was honorably discharged on October 15, 1953. He was united in marriage with Colene Gray on April 24, 1952, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, before Virgil was transferred to Alaska.

After being discharged from the service, they settled near Manning where they farmed until 1970 on his family farm. They then moved into Manning where he became a feed salesman for Moorman's Manufacturing.

Virgil was a member of the United Methodist Church, the VFW Post No. 3517, and a long-time member of the Community Hospital Association of Manning, Board of Directors, serving as secretary for many years.

Virgil had been in failing health for only a few months before his death on Wednesday, April 18, 1984, at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa, at the age of 54 years, 6 months, and 23 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jon Alvin, as an infant; and two brothers, Leonard, in infancy, and Gilbert Rowedder.

He is survived by his wife, Colene, Manning; one son, Mark Rowedder and his wife Martha, Grinnell, Iowa; one daughter, Becky Ashwill and her husband Marvin, Tulsa, Oklahoma; one granddaughter, Kelli Rowedder; one brother, LeRoy Rowedder and his wife Winona, Manning; two sisters, Berdine Ehrichs and her husband Wilmer, Denison, Iowa, and Joan Mohr and Her husband Russ, Manning; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Rowedder, Fountain Hills, Arizona.


Virgil Rowedder is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
