AIR MEDAL
An Eighth Air Force Liberator Station, England, Sgt. Vertus W. Ewoldt, Manning, has been awarded the air medal for meritorious achievement in aerial combat.
He is a gunner on a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber, and has made numerous missions over Germany and enemy occupied Europe.
He enlisted in the army in March, 1943, and has been overseas since April, 1944.

He has made 31 bombing missions over Germany and enemy-occupied Europe.

Santa Ana, Calif. S/Sgt Vertus W. Ewoldt, of Rt. 2, Manning, currently is assigned to the Army Air Forces redistribution station at I Santa Ana Army Air Base after completing 31 missions against the l enemy as gunner on a 8-17 Flying Fortress bomber of the 8th Air Force in the European theatre of operations.

S /Sgt. Ewoldt, who has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medial with three Oak Leaf Clusters, entered the service March 3, 1943, and went overseas on March 25 of 1944.
He was a farmer in civilian life.
While at Santa Ana Army Air Base, a station of the AAF Personnel Distribution Command, returned combat veterans from overseas air forces receive complete physical examinations, reclassification according to military skills and assignment to domestic stations of the AAF.

VERTUS W. EWOLDT

Vertus William Ewoldt, 48, died Monday morning, September 12, 1966, at the Iowa Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown, where he had lived for the last three years. He had been ill for many years.

Military funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Ohde Funeral Home at Manning, with burial in the Manning Cemetery. Pastor Edward Heinicke, of Zion Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Mr. Ewoldt, son of William and Amanda (Asmus) Ewoldt, was born October 9, 1917, in Hayes Township, Crawford County. He attended rural schools and farmed at home.

On March 10, 1943, he enlisted in the Air Force, and flew 31 missions over Europe in a flying fortress. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Following his discharge from the service Mr. Ewoldt worked for the Heider Manufacturing Company and later, for the Western Inn, both at Carroll.

He is survived by a brother, Truman Ewoldt of Westside; and a sister, Mrs. Loretta Vinke, Manning. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Gilbert, who was killed in World War II.


Vertus Ewoldt is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
