Robert Dean, son of Louie and Anna Schroeder Tank, was born July 17, 1932, on the home farm six miles north of Manning in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended rural school through the eighth grade. He then attended Manning High School graduating in 1950. Following the completion of his schooling he worked on his brother's farm and at Priebe's Hatchery.

In 1952 Bob entered the United States Army. He served in Korea for 15 1/2 months. He returned to Manning following his honorable discharge. On July 12, 1955, he was united in marriage with Hermanette Ann Schiltz at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Four children were born to this union. They lived in Manning for a year following their marriage while Bob worked at Manning Creamery Company. Then they moved to the country and started farming on their own. Bob farmed for 43 years, semi-retiring in 1994 when they moved to their new home in Manning.

Bob was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, American Legion Post 22, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517, and a life member of the Scheutzen Verein. He had a life long interest in his cattle and in his spare time enjoyed fishing, playing cards and spending time with his buddies at the Corner Cafe. Most recently Bob was restoring an antique tractor. Above all Bob was committed to his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren.

Bob was diagnosed with cancer in December of 1998 and was unable to win the battle with that disease. He died at home on Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the age of 67 years, 8 months, and 29 days.

Footprints

One night I had a dream. I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and across the skies flashed scenes from my life. In each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand. One was mine, and one was the Lord's.

When the last scene of my life appeared before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand and to my surprise I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of footprints. And I noticed that it was at the lowest and saddest times in my life.

I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you would walk with me all the way. But I notice that during the most troublesome times in my life there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why you left my side when I needed you most."

The Lord replied, "My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, where you see only one set of footprints, I was carrying you."
