Joel Patrick, son of James and Diane (Young) Sutton, was born December 7, 1965, in Eddyville, Iowa. He grew up in Eddyville and graduated from Eddyville High School in 1984.

Joel was united in marriage with Teri Sedore and two children were born to this couple. They later divorced, but continued to remain friends.

In 2000, Joel was blessed with another marriage, this time with Sheila Lamb and two children were born to this union.

Joel served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He enlisted in 1987 and served as a Fuel Specialist and later on as a recruiter. He was stationed in Germany, Las Vegas, Korea, and Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. He also served deployments to Turkey and Iraq before being honorably discharged in 2009.

Joel grew up in the Catholic Faith and aspired to serve the Lord. As he exited the military life, he was invited to minister United Methodist congregations in southern Iowa. He pastored churches in Lorimor, Macksburg, Hebron, Afton, and Arispe. In 2019, he accepted a call to the dual parish of Manning United Methodist Church and United Church of Manilla.

Joel loved to learn and developed numerous hobbies throughout his life. A few of these hobbies include: riding bicycle (especially on RAGBRAI), woodturning and carving, telescopes, model rockets and RC cars, yo-yos, origami, playing the ukulele, crocheting, building legos, fishing, kayaking, camping, glassblowing and baking. Joel was extremely proud of his family and cherished the time spent with them.

On Monday, May 24, 2021, Joel suffered a heart attack while enjoying a bike ride and subsequently passed away at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning. He was 55 years, 5 months, and 12 days of age.
