William M. Spiese entered the service on October 28, 1942. He left November 12, 1942, for Camp Dodge.
Bill was overseas for 6 months and 17 days.

Decorations --- 2 bronze battle stars; 1 overseas service bar; Combat Infantry badge; European Theater Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal.
Bill graduated from the National School (Basic Electricity) in Los Angeles in March 1943.
He was in the service for 39 months and was discharged January 19, 1946, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.

Funeral services for William Max Spiese were held Wednesday, July 29, 1992 at 10:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service with Fern Jensen as organist. Interment was held in the Manning Cemetery.

William, son of Max and Katie Haack Spiese, was born April 27, 1922 near Battle Creek, Iowa. He was graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1941.

Bill served in Europe with the United States Army during World War II.
Until 1958 Bill was engaged in farming near Battle Creek. On November 23, 1958 he was united in marriage with Bernice Mundt at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He made his home in Manning and farmed near the community. Bill was active in farming until his death, although in later years his health prevented him from doing field work.
Bill was hospitalized for a short period of time; he died at his home in Manning suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday evening, July 26, 1992 at the age of 70 years, 2 months and 29 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by a sister, Marjorie Hansen; and by his mother and father-in-law, James and Mary Anthony Mundt.

Survivors included his wife, Bernice, of Manning; the following sisters: Maxine and her husband, Lester Feddersen, of Anthon; Katherine and her husband, Edwin Kistenmacher, of Holstein; Mildred and her husband, Ray Ernst, of Ida Grove; Bonita and her husband, Donald Diamond, of Marshalltown; Alice and her husband, Earl Miller, of Santa Monica, California; Rebecca and her husband, Roger Schmidt, of Holstein; and Linda and her husband, Bob Mattson, of Canyon Country, California; a brother-in-law, Carlton Hansen of Kansas City, Missouri; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Bill was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517.


William & Bernice are buried in the Manning Cemetery.
