Two sailors from the corn-fed town of Manning, Iowa met at Yokosuka, Japan the 11th of February 1952. They were Willie Lohmeier and Louis Schwiesow, school chums and life-long buddies from the Corn State. This marks the fourth time they have met since serving with Uncle Sam's Navy.

Funeral services for Louis G. Schwiesow were held Friday, February 24, 1989 at 10:30 a. m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Pastor Glenn Wiechman officiated the service with Marian Joens as organist and Marlene Jahn as vocalist.

Interment was in Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla.

Casketbearers and military honor were by Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard. Honorary casketbearers were Glen Macumber, Bob Georgius, Norman Ertz, Whitey Grage, Tom Rutherford, Bernie Higgins and Ron Christensen.

Louis, son of Walter and Caroline "Lena" Vinke Schwiesow, was born June 23, 1930 at Manning, Iowa. He attended Manning schools and was graduated from Manning High School.

Immediately following graduation, Louie joined the United States Navy, retiring in 1968. During his naval career he served during two wars, Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.

December 1, 1949 Louie was united in marriage with Barbara L. Peterson at Yuma, Arizona. Three children, Stanley, Rebecca, and Louis, Jr. were born to this union.

While he was in the navy Louie's nickname was Swede. However when Louie retired and moved to Manilla there was another Swede Schwiesow in town. Louie began to use his given name. In Manilla Louie worked at various jobs, including the City of Manilla, retiring June 1, 1988.

Following a short illness Louie died Monday, February 20, 1989 at the Veterans Administration Hospital Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 58 year's 7 months and 28 days.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara on September 1987 also by his parents, by a sister, Ruth Johnson, and by a sister, Fern, it infancy.

Louie is survived by his children Stanley Schwiesow and his wife, Patricia, of Council Bluffs; Rebecca and her husband, David Agan, 01 Bellevue, Nebraska; and Louis Schwiesow, Jr., and his wife, Kim, of Manilla; by 10 grandchildren; by his special friend, Maxine Coufal, of Swisher, Iowa; by the following brothers and sisters: Earl Schwiesow and his wife, Carol, of Fredericksburg, Iowa; Bernice and her husband, Ralph Dunlap, of San Jose, California; Colleen and her husband, Vern Daeges, of Harlan; and Victor Schwiesow and his wife, Donna, of Manning; by a brother-in-law, Don Johnson, of Coon Rapids; and by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Louie was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Manning, the American Legion in Manilla, and of the Omaha Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla.
