Charles Junior Schumann, Fireman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schumann of
Manning, is attached to the recreation department of the Naval Submarine Base,
Pearl Harbor, Tuffy Schumann played fullback on the Submarine base football
team, the "Packers", in 1948, and was chosen captain for the 1949
season. He is now a member of the SubPac Baseball Team, playing as a utility
outfielder and pinch hitter with a batting average of .295 thus far.
Schumann entered the Naval Service in 1947 and received his recruit training at
the Naval Training Center, San Diego, California. Before entering the Navy, he
was graduated from Manning High school, where he was active in football and baseball.

Funeral services for Charles Junior Schumann were held Monday, October 11, 1999, at
First Baptist Church, Buffalo Center, Iowa. Pastor Gary Bergman officiated the service with
Vera Bronleewe as organist and Bruce Johnson as soloist.
Interment was held in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota on
Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. with Gary Boyken, Paul Jutting, Larry
Blomster, John Blomster, Ray Reasland, and Denny Wessels as casket bearers.
Honorary casket bearers were his nieces and nephews.
Military rites were held by the American Legion/VFW Post Color Guard of Buffalo Center.
Charles Junior Schumann, son of Charles F. and Mary (Passick) Schumann, was born May
8, 1929, in Manning, Iowa. He graduated from Manning High School in 1947. Chuck then
served his country in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service from 1948 through 1952.
On January 23, 1952, he was united in marriage to Betty Peregrine in Sun Valley,
California. Chuck graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa with the class of 1956.
He was a teacher at Buffalo Center Community Schools from 1956 to 1961 and at
Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools from 1961 through 1970. He taught junior high
science and was the high school football and track coach. He also owned and managed
Buffalo Lanes in Buffalo Center for several years and was a franchisee with Casey's
General Store. He served on the Buffalo Center Council and was a member of the
Betterment Club. Chuck was a lifetime member of both the American Legion and V.F.W. He
was also a charter member of B.C. Development Corporation and Bison, Ltd.
Chuck was a member of the First Christian Church in Sturgis, South Dakota and attended
First Baptist Church in Buffalo Center. Chuck passed away on Friday, October 8, 1999, at
the Farimont Community Hospital, Fairmont, Minnesota at the age of 70 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and 2 brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty, of Buffalo Center, Iowa; his son, Dale
Schumann and his wife, Cheryl, of Sherburn, Minnesota; his daughter, Robin Johnson,
and her husband, Bruce, of Chicago, Illinois; his four grandchildren: Dana, Heidi, and
Adam Williamson and Tucker Schumann; his sister, Evelyn Vollstedt, of Manning, Iowa;
his brother, Eugene 'Hap' Schumann, of Manning; a sister-in-law, LaVonne Schumann, of
Ames, Iowa; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bob and Lila (Peregrine) Robillard of
Sturgis, South Dakota; Bob and Donna Peregrine of Rapid City, South Dakota; Howard and
Barbara Peregrine of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; and William and Delores Peregrine of Alturus,
California and a host of nieces and nephews.
