In April of 1924, he was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Scotland, and was later confirmed there in June of 1928. He graduated from Scotland High School in 1932. In 1933 he moved to Willows, California, and worked as a mechanic for several years.

The family moved to Manning, Iowa in 1942, and shortly thereafter, Gene enlisted in the Navy. He attended steam fitting/welders school and spent three years repairing ships that had been torpedoed. After returning from the service, he again worked as a mechanic in the Petersen Garage and then the Bock Garage. He then opened his own business, the Schatz Body Shop, retiring in 1975.

Gene was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church. He served in various capacities with the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Manning School Board, Manning Community Chest, and New Hope Village. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and traveling.

On November 11, 1996, Gene entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, where he died March 1, 1999. He reached the age of 85 years, 1 month and 11 days.
