Russell Steven Popp
Russell Steven, son of Russell Raymond and Margaret (Singsank) Popp, was born August 18, 1952, at Manning General Hospital in Manning, Iowa. He attended Dow City-Arion Community School and graduated from high school there in 1970.

Soon after graduation, Russell enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS McMorris and USS Sacramento. He worked at sea as a machinist, repairman and fireman, often being called upon to make parts for these old ships from scratch. Russell was honorably discharged in the mid-1970s and worked as a surveyor for the State of Iowa Department of Transportation. He worked his way up over 35 years of service to DOT road designer. An accident in the fall of 2005 eventually forced Russell to stop working.

Russell was a faithful member of St. Cecelia's Church in Ames. He was a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Knights of Columbus. Russell also was an active member of the American Legion Post #37 in Ames. He was an avid hunter, maintaining memberships in Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. Russell contributed his handyman skills to many Habitat for Humanity projects. He enjoyed collecting coins, bowling and golfing. Russell will be remembered for "always being there" for any friend who needed help.

Russell was battling some health issues recently and died suddenly and unexpectedly at home in Ames, Iowa, on Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at the age of 54 years, 1 month, and 15 days.

Russell was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his mother Margaret Popp of Carroll; sister Cheryl and husband Robert Zobel of Sioux City; brother James Popp of Sac City; and sister Lori Miller and husband Patrick Tovaas of Fort Collins, Colorado; nieces Jennifer Zobel of Rockford, Illinois, and Valori Zobel of Omaha, Nebraska, and her son Conor; nephew Andrew Miller of Yuma, Arizona; aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.
