Featured Manning Plaza resident of the month of May is Roy Schrum. Roy has been a resident of the Manning Plaza since April 4, 1979.

Roy was born March 4, 1931, in Manning, to Hugo and Adelaide (Wiese) Schrum. He grew up in Manning living two blocks east of the Plaza. Roy was third of four children. He has two remaining sisters, Dorothea Musfeldt of Manning and Mrs. Wendell Luetje of Westside.

Roy graduated from Manning High School in the spring of 1949. He moved to Ogallala, Nebraska, and worked in a department store and then went to Fort Benning, Georgia, for a 20 week training in infantry leadership which was during the Korean War. Roy returned to Ogallala and worked for a rancher for soil conservation. At this time he also continued his work for the National Guard.

In the fall of 1953, he attended Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Illinois.
January of 1958 he began his internship at Marengo, Illinois, and in December Roy resigned due to health problems. He returned to Manning and worked for MJM Enterprises until he again experienced health ailments. In 1974, the doctors retired him and he moved to the Manning Plaza in April of 1979.

Roy especially enjoys card playing, so if you walk into the dining room on a Tuesday afternoon he'll be shuffling those cards. He enjoys taking early morning walks, a good cup of coffee, and visiting. Roy is the Manning Plaza welcome committee!

He provides residents with Bible devotions each Friday morning, gives the Good Friday service each Easter season, enjoys ceramics, and many other activities. Roy also speaks fluent German.
