William "Bill" D. Roberts, the son of Earl and Clethus (Jordan) Roberts, was born on March 31, 1930, in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Manning High School in 1948 and received his B.A. from Drake University in 1952. Bill served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was united in marriage with Madonna Mae Steen on August 26, 1950, in Manning.

After living many places during the first 18 years of marriage, Madonna and Bill made their home in Newton in 1968. Bill worked in sales his entire life, retiring from Winpower in 1981. Bill was a 50 years member of the Masonic Lodge #450, American Legion Post 0154 in Marathon, Florida, and BPOE Elks Lodge #1270. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and playing cards. Madonna and Bill also loved the 25 winters they spent in the Florida Keys and the many motorhome trips they made across the United States and Canada.

Those left to honor Bill's memory are his three daughters, Lynn Kennedy of Altoona, Karen (David) Honold of Des Moines, and Janet (Dean) Nihart of Johnston; five grandchildren, Matthew (Jillian) Carter, Bryan (Amanda) Carter, Joseph Honold, Paul Honold, and Amy Nihart; and his great-granddaughter, Kendall Carter. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Madonna in 2011.
