Roger was inducted into the Army on July 7, 1957. He trained in Fort Carson, Colorado; Fort Leonard, Missouri; Fort Lee, Virginia; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was discharged on July 7, 1959, with the rank of SP4 and received the Good Conduct Medal. Roger commented that he counts his blessings that he never had to see combat.
