Ralph R. "Jake" Ramsey, 79, of Carroll, Iowa, and formerly of Manilla, Iowa, died Sunday, October 18, 1992, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
Mass of the Christian burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. Father Mervin Hood will be the celebrant. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Manilla. Military honors will be conducted by the Manilla American Legion. Lector for the Mass will be Madeline Peplow. Gift bearers will be Mr. Ramsey's children.
Honorary casketbearers will be Melvin Busche, Boyd Merrick, Art Schulte, and Elmer Peters. Casket bearers will be Dick Burmood, Donald Blom, Wayne Daniels, Roland Huebner, Roscoe Myer, and Bill Lohrmann.
Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. today at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. today and there will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. today by Holy Spirit Parish.
Born August 6, 1913, at Botna, Iowa, he was a son of Charles H. and Bessie (Johnson) Ramsey. He spent his younger years in the Botna community and attended country schools. He graduated from Manning High School in 1931.
On November 22, 1934, he was married to Mildred Reiff at Manning, Iowa. Following their marriage the couple made their home in Manilla.
In March 1944, Mr. Ramsey entered the Navy and served during World War II as a gunnery instructor. He was honorably discharged in January 1946. He then entered business with his brother-in-law Walter Reiff and owned and operated Reiff-Ramsey Hardware Store in Manilla.
In 1963 he was appointed postmaster at Manilla and served in that position until his retirement in 1976. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey moved to Carroll in 1988. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll and was a member and past commander of the Manilla American Legion.
Mr. Ramsey is survived by his wife, Mildred, of Carroll; two daughters, JoAnn Gresso of St. Charles, Missouri; and Teresa Miller and her husband, George, of Macungie, Pennsylvania; two sons, Mark Ramsey and his wife, Carole, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Thomas Ramsey and his wife, Jayne, of Riverton, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Juanita Boeck of Harlan, Iowa, Bernice Laverty of Manning, Iowa, Thelma Hodne of Manning and Mary Ramsey of Manning; three brothers, Edward Ramsey and his wife, Dolores, of Manning; Orren Ramsey and his wife, Fern, of Manning and Jack Ramsey and his wife, Edna, of Manning. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mayburn Ramsey; and a sister, Edna Peters.
