Manning Sailor in Recent Guam Storm Calls Home After Duty on Saipan Robert McGrath, sk 3-c, called his folks, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. McGrath Monday night from Seattle, Washington, where he had just arrived from Saipan where he was stationed. He reported a rough passage but was happy to be back in the states. He expects a leave home in about 30 days. GETS BUSINESS TRAINING Robert McGrath, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. R. McGrath, who entered boot training at Great Lakes six weeks ago, has been promoted from apprentice seaman to seaman second class and has (been taken out oŁ boot training. He was selected from a company of 120 men to take a course in navy business training. He will not receive boot leave and may not be able to come home for a number of months. |
Mr. McGrath was born in Manning, January 2, 1928, son of Daniel and Marie (Moser) McGrath, and had lived in Beaumont the past year. He had resided in Des Moines for many years, where he was general manager for Penn-Dixie Cement Corporation. He continued in the cement business while moving to various cities throughout the country and retired from LaFarge Cement Corporation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1993. His memberships included Auburn Masonic Lodge, Des Moines Scottish Rite, Iowa American Legion and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine.
He was a Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; a daughter, Robbin Christian of Missouri City, Texas; a sister, Mary Stangl of Manning; and two grandchildren.
A brother, Ralph McGrath, died July 21, 1972.
