Robert Dale McDonald, 52, of Storm Lake, formerly of Manning, died unexpectedly at Buena Vista County Memorial Hospital in Storm Lake early Wednesday, September 18, 1974, after suffering a heart attack.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Irwin, with burial there in Oak Hill Cemetery. The Rev. J. Elmer Brunk will officiate. Austin Earl Hiatt Post, American Legion of Irwin, will conduct military rites. The body is at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
Mr. McDonald, son of Arthur Earl and Anna (Carlson) McDonald, was born December 16, 1921, in Shelby County. He graduated from Irwin High School in 1939 and was a veteran of World War II.
His marriage to Janet Stangel took place on May 3, 1947, and they lived in Irwin until moving to Manning in 1961. Ten years ago they moved to Storm Lake, where he was a bookkeeper for the Anderson Brass Company. He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post at Irwin. He was interested in sports for young boys, particularly Little League baseball.
Survivors include his wife; five children, Dennis of Boise, Idaho; Gary of Knoxville, Mrs. Jerome (Sue) Gross of Westphalia, Dale of Boston, Massachusetts, and John, a sophomore at Storm Lake High School; nine grandchildren; a brother, Ward McDonald, with the U.S. Army in Germany; and a sister, Mrs. John (Leona) Knorr of Des Moines. Another sister, Mrs. Alice Rice, preceded him in death.
