A resident of Manning six years, Gib came here from Ida Grove as agent for the State Farm Insurance group. He and his wife Joan have four children, Gail 5, Diane 4, Michael 2 and Steven eight months. They are members of Sacred Heart Catholic church.

Gib, 29, was born at Ida Grove where he received his education. He spent five years as a linotype operator on the Ida Grove Pioneer Record and a year on the Denison Newspapers, coming here in September 1954.

His military service includes 13 years in the Ida Grove National Guard and his rank is first lieutenant. He lists golf as his hobby.

Gilbert Thomas "Gib " Phillips of West Des Moines, Iowa, joined his heavenly father, on July 25, 2014, at Edgewater, West Des Moines.

Gib was born June 10, 1930, to Gilbert and Fern Phillips in Ida Grove, Iowa. He graduated from Ida Grove High School. Gib married the love of his life, Joan Martin, on October 3, 1954, and they celebrated sixty years of marriage.

Gib began his career with State Farm Insurance in 1954 opening his office in Manning and retired after 44 years in business. He was an active leader in his community and participated in many activities including: the Manning General Hospital Board, Sacred Heart Church, Manning City Council, and Manning Municipal Light Plant board. Gib represented Manning on the board of Western Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association and he was a 19-year member director of Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative.

Gib is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Joan, daughters, Gail (Joe) Kotval, and Diane (Brad) Jones, and sons Michael (Sandy) Phillips, and Steven (Julie) Phillips; nine grandchildren: Molly Kotval, Amy (Tyler) Irwin; Benjamin (Mandy) Jones, Jenny Jones; Amanda, Michelle and Michael Phillips; Mariana and Blake Phillips; and his sister Greta Tollas. He is survived also by his in-laws Dale and Joan Martin, Storm Lake, Iowa, Joyce Hoskins, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Elaine and Jerry Carlson, Bella Vista, Arkansas, many nieces and nephews…Also remembered by many friends and colleagues.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Fern Phillips from Ida Grove, Iowa, his brother-in-law Marion Martin and sister-in-law, Noreen Martin. He was well-known for his love of golf and an avid supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday July 30, 2014, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3663 66th Street, Urbandale. Private burial will be held at a later date. Visitation will be held from 5-7 pm Tuesday July 29, 2014, at Iles Funeral Home, Dunns Chapel, 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Manning Child Care Center.
