Leroy Paulsen, son of Pete and Cora (Weaver) Paulsen, was born November 8, 1914, in Crawford County. He was educated in the rural schools near his home. He was married in 1943 to Viola Davidson, and they had one daughter, Patsy.
He entered the army in 1943, and went to Germany as an infantryman. S. Sgt. Paulsen was
killed in action November 10, 1944.
His body was returned to the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning on September 24, 1948, with military escort on the Chicago Great Western for burial in the Manning Cemetery.
The Rev. S.R. Reed, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, gave the sermon.
Merle Hay Post American Legion other legionnaires and servicemen and many relatives and friends attended the services.
C.H. Brunning had charge of the military services. Everett Stutzman and Ed Rust carried the colors. F.W. Franzwa and Henry Johnson comprised the color guard. Francis Gregory, Freeling Dedrick, Virgil and James Gliem, Willard Dillavou, and Walter Heitcamp acted as honorary pallbearers.
C.H. Bruning presented the flag to Mrs. Paulsen. Raymond Haselton and Dean Bruning sounded taps.
Appropriate music was furnished by a men's quartet composed of W.H. Rust, A.F. Haupert, H.W. Porter, and O.B. Moorhouse. Mrs. Moorhouse was piano accompanist. S/Sgt. Paulsen, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Paulsen, was born November 8, 1914, in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and was killed in action in Germany at the age of 30 years and 2 days.
He was married miss Viola Davidson February 10, 1943, in Mineral Wells, Texas.
Called to service December 1, 1942, he received his training at Camp Wolters, Texas. The last time he was home was September 5, 1943, reporting back to Ft. Dix, New Jersey. He left for overseas the last of February, 1941.
He is survived by his wife, Viola, and baby daughter, Patsy LeRay, whom he never saw; his mother, Mrs. Cora C. Paulsen, and a sister, Mrs. Verne (Dorothy) Ennis.
His father, Peter Paulsen, preceded him in death.
He is buried in an American Cemetery in Belgium.
