Patrick "Pat" J. Sullivan

Patrick "Pat" J. Sullivan, 82, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Dell Rapids, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Avera Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. His Memorial Mass will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at the Prince of Peace Chapel in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Inurnment with Military Rites will be in the St. Mary Cemetery, Dell Rapids. Memorials may be directed to Prince of Peace Living Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Patrick "Pat" Joseph Sullivan was born on June 13, 1929, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Charles and Celeste (Kelley) Sullivan. He grew up and attended school at Manning, Iowa, from kindergarten thru the 8th grade. He moved with his family to Carroll, Iowa and graduated from high school in 1947.

He enlisted and served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1946-1949. After his discharge in 1949, he attended St. Regis College in Denver for one year. He married Zita Smith on September 3, 1951, in Manning, Iowa. He then attended Buena Vista University in Carroll, Iowa, and received his Bachelor's Degree in 1953. Pat started teaching and coaching in 1953 and also pursued his Master's Degree. He received his Master's Degree from Drake University in 1959. He then became principle at Terril High School from 1959-1967 and Everly High School from 1967-1973. Pat was an insurance adjustor in crop/hail claims until 1979. Pat and Zita moved to a farm northwest of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, and crop farmed until 1989 when he retired. In 1993, the couple moved into Dell Rapids. Pat and Zita moved to an apartment in Sioux Falls in 2004. Zita passed away in 2007. Pat remained at Prince of Peace where he was extremely involved in their activities and their faith mission.

Pat passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Avera Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls. He was 82 and preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Zita and his brother, Michael.

Pat is survived by his daughter, Kerry (Joseph) Thornell of Dell Rapids, stationed in Fresno, California; his grandsons, Joe (Lynsey) Thornell of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, and Ryan (Jessica) Thornell of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his four great grandchildren, Jaylyn, Jack, Madelyn and Layney; and his sister, Shannon (James) Schauf of Overland Park, Kansas.
