"Mike" Meyers, an Omaha Public Power, District director for 22 years and a widely known figure in Omaha and Nebraska for the last half-century; died Friday in Scottsdale, Ariz.
He was 83.
In addition to his OPPP position, Meyers had served as chairman of, the State Aeronautics Commission and was president and chairman of First Federal Savings and Loan of Omaha.
His son, Marvin, of Houston, Texas, declined to say what caused Meyers' death.
Meyers and his wife, Helen, had retired to Arizona several years ago but maintained a home at 765 Fairacres Road
Born in 1899 in Manning, Iowa, Meyers attended the University of Nebraska. A private pilot, Meyers was active in Nebraska aviation and began pushing for establishment of an Omaha municipal airport in the late 1920s.
He actively promoted state aviation for the next several decades and was the originator of the Omaha Airport Authority Act of 1958.
In 1928, he entered politics, coordinating Republican support locally for the election of President Herbert Hoover. After the election, Meyers and Hoover became friends. Thirty-four years later Meyers was named a trustee of the Hoover Foundation.
In the late. 1940s and early 1950s, Meyers served as finance chairman of the Douglas County and State Republican
Meyers had worked as an investment broker for several years in Omaha. In 1947, after serving with the Nebraska Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and the Nebraska Guard, Meyers was named to a seat on the State. Aeronautics Commission Two years later, he was named commission chairman.
OPPD Board
In 1956, he was selected to fill a vacancy on the OPPD board of directors. He later was elected to the board and re-elected for several terms,
also serving as president. He served until 1978, when he retired.
Meyers was credited with playing a major role in the growth and development of the utility.
"He brought to OPPD a great deal business experience," said Fred Petersen, an assistant general manager with the utility. "He had a lot of intense interest in the utility."
William Metzger, a former OPPD director who served on the board for 12 years with Meyers, said he "was an excellent businessman with the highest integrity. He was a very valuable asset to the board."
During his last few years on the board, Meyers came under fire from other OPPD directors because his poor health led to frequent absences from board meetings.
First Federal
In 1961, Meyers became president of Investors Life Insurance Co. of Nebraska. The next year, Meyers was named president of
First Federal. He later became chairman. He served on the savings and loan board until a few years ago, according Robert Root, current president of First Federal.
In addition to his wife and son Marvin, Meyers is survived by a second son, Richard of Wickenburg, Arizona, and two grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled in Lincoln, but the time and date were pending Tuesday.
