Melvin was inducted into the Army on August 6, 1958. He took his basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado, and then served eight weeks at Fort Lewis, Washington, as a personal driver for the Medic's section and a jeep driver for a S2 Major. Melvin reached the rank of SPC4 - E4 and received the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged on May 6, 1960.
