Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peters Catholic Church here for Walter Mahlberg, 53, Defiance, who died Friday, October 12, 1979, following an apparent heart attack.
Son of Walter and Lavera (Downey) Mahlberg, he was born March 16, 1926, in Panama, Iowa.
Mahlberg, a U.S. Navy Veteran, was a trucker for several years, operated a gas station in Manning, worked for the Defiance Public Works Department, and for the Harlan schools. He retired in 1977.
Mahlberg was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church at Defiance and VFW post 6256 at Logan.
He is survived by his wife, Velma; three brothers, Joseph of Earling, Mike and Peter of Panama; and nieces and nephews.
Wake services will be 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery at Panama.

Walter "Butch" Mahlberg, worked for Emil Jansen - owner of a
service station (Phillips 66 franchise) in Manning along Highway 141 near the
Nishnabotna Creek, called "Emil's Service," and then Butch purchased that
business from Emil. Next Merlyn Irlbeck purchased the business from Butch.
