Merlin Ivan, son of Ivan Henry and Norma Louise (Jons) Frahm, was born October 15, 1945, at Carroll, Iowa. He lived with his parents and siblings on a farm northwest of Manning. Merlin attended rural school at Hayes Township No. 7 until it closed. He finished elementary school in Manning and graduated with the Manning High School Class of 1963. He went to Commercial Extension in Des Moines before enlisting in the United State Navy where he served for three years. Merlin was stationed at Kunia Facility in Wahiawa, Hawaii as a Communications Specialist during the Vietnam War. While in Hawaii he met and married Donna Gilman in January of 1968. They continued to live in Hawaii after his honorable discharge in March 1969 and were the parents of two children.

Merlin worked at WHEELS Car Dealership in Honolulu before returning to Iowa to live on the family farm for a short time. He then lived in South Dakota for several years before he started working for B R B Contractors in 1983 in Kansas. Merlin supervised jobs throughout the Midwest. He retired as Superintendent in September of 2010. In his spare time, Merlin enjoyed watching basketball and football on TV, fishing with his buddies and receiving photos of his grandchildren.

Merlin suffered from heart and lung problems later in life. However, he died unexpectedly at home in Axtell, Kansas, where he was found on March 2, 2011. He was 65 years, 4 months and 15 days.

Preceding Merlin in death are his parents and brother Dennis Frahm in 1978.
