Loren entered the Army in 1951. He received his basic training in Hawaii, at Schofield Barracks and took additional training in Tokyo, Japan. He then served with the 424 Field Artillery in Korea. He was involved in some of the major battles of the war and was discharged in 1953 after the cease-fire. Loren was awarded the Bronze Star, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal and attained the rank of Corporal.

Funeral service for Loren Weller, was held Thursday, October 20, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Lanette L. Plambeck of the United Methodist Church in Manning officiated with JoAnn Karsten as organist.
Casket bearers were Doug Saltsgaver, Butch Gill, Matt Cable, Scott Rosener, Lynn Phillips, and Gaylin Ranniger. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery with the American Legion Post 22 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517 of Manning providing Military Hon-ors.
Loren Dale Weller was born November 13, 1930, the son of Edward and Hilda (Gottsch) Weller, at Crawford County Hospital in Denison, Iowa, along with his twin brother Lowell William Weller. He lived on a farm south of Buck Grove, Iowa until 1934 when the family moved to a farm northwest of Manning. Loren completed an eighth grade education at the local rural school and spent the next several years assisting his father and neighbors before being drafted into the military in 1951. Loren attained the rank of corporal in the Army and completed a tour of duty in Korea. Upon his return, Loren continued farm work and bought the first of several parcels of land to call his own.
Loren met his future wife, Helen Phillips, in 1958, and they were married later that year at the United Methodist Church in Lake View, Iowa. They made their home on the Manning farm and were the proud parents of seven children. Loren thoroughly enjoyed the agricultural life and took pride in expanding his farming operation. He was a reluctant retired farmer in his later years, still directing operations from his home and pickup truck until his death.
On Monday, October 17, 2005, Loren died from complications of cancer and congestive heart failure at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning. He was 74 years of age.
Loren was preceded in death by his parents, sister Fern and two brothers Glenn and Lowell.
He is survived by his wife Helen Weller of Manning; two sons: Dan; and David and wife Julie, all of Manning; five daughters: Elaine Saunders and husband Bill of Bondurant; Pat Joens and husband Skip of Des Moines; Bonnie Gill and husband Butch of Hoffman Estates, Illinois; Valerie Saltsgaver and husband Doug of Des Moines; and Sharon Cable and husband Matt of Dyersville; nine grandchildren: Amy, Anna, Dereck, Justin, Jordan, Jonathon, Luke, Madeline and Cameron; one brother Gordon Weller of Westside; two sisters: Gladys Peterson and husband Carl of Schleswig and Cleo Bohm and husband Ray of Estherville; many other relatives and friends.
