Larry, son of Raymond and Elisabeth Witt, volunteered for Army service on December 5, 1956. He took his basic training and advanced Clerk Typist training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. He went overseas to the U.S. Army Medical school in Landstuhl, Germany, as a Clerk Typist. Larry was discharged on December 4, 1958, and obtained the rank of SP4. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of VFW.

LARRY LEE WITT
Larry, son of Raymond G. and Elizabeth M. (Schluter) Witt, was born January 23, 1938, at Manning, Iowa. He graduated from Manning High School in 1956. Larry served with the United States Army from December of 1956 until December of 1958, spending 20 months as a medical clerk typist in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, Larry attended Iowa State College in Ames.

On March 26, 1965, Larry was united in marriage with Doris (Phillips) Gruhn at the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla. They farmed near Manilla until 1972 when they moved to their present farm home between Manning and Manilla. During the 1960s Larry was a partner in the Manning Implement Company.

Larry was active in civic, agricultural, and church organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manilla and just completed a six year term as Elder and Clerk. He served for many years on the Aspinwall Coop Board and currently held the office of Secretary. He was Crawford County ASC Committeeman and was a member of the FHA County Board in Denison. Larry was also a member of the American Legion in Manning and held life membership in the Manning VFW Post and in the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein. In his spare time Larry enjoyed fishing and playing euchre. He was always interested in farming, especially his stock cow herd. Larry enjoyed being with children.

Larry died unexpectedly at his farm home on Wednesday, September 3, 1986, at the age of 48 years, 7 months, and 11 days.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Witt; by a brother, Russell; and by a brother, Merle, in infancy.

Larry is survived by his wife, Doris, of rural Manning; by his father, Ray, and his wife, Nellie, of Manning; by three children: Krista L. Witt, at home; Brian L. Gruhn, of Cedar Rapids; and Kenton R. Gruhn and his wife, Sandra, of Manilla; by three grandchildren: Andrea Gruhn Boehme, Julie Gruhn, and Jacie Gruhn; by two sisters, Charlene and her husband, Fred Stokey, of Omaha, and Ardith Mann, of Omaha; by his mother-in-law, Edna Phillips, of Manilla; by a brother-in-law, Robert Phillips and his wife, Audrey, of Manning; and by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.


Larry Witt is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
