LaVere G. White, M.D. ("Whitey" "L G" "Doc") died peacefully in his home on November 17, 2003. Throughout his life, he was deeply devoted to his family, medicine, and music He had many interests and hobbies and he loved all living things. L.G. practiced medicine in Fort Lauderdale for 35 years. He was a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and served as Chief of Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital. After he retired from private practice, he directed the hospital Employees' Clinic and for many years volunteered his services as a physician to the MediVan of Fort Lauderdale.
A fine musician, L.G. played saxophone and clarinet professionally with several big bands touring the Midwest and South from 1935 to 1939. Throughout his college years, he played with the Avalon Band For the past 23 years, he played with several local bands, including the Medicats and Aristocrats.
He raised tropical fish, orchids, and citrus fruit He mastered photographic techniques from black and white through digital, and filled the air with chatter from his amateur radio rig. He traveled to Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe and shared his experiences in travelogues.
L.G. was born in Manning, Iowa, on March 27th, 1917, and lived his youth in the small farm towns of Harlan, Aurelia, and Irwin, Iowa. He was Valedictorian of his high school class and attended the University of Iowa on a scholarship.
He met his beloved wife, Mabel Rodger, at the University of Iowa. While graduate students, they were married in December of 1944. L.G completed his studies in 1945 with an M.D. degree.
He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps and in the United States Public Health service.
He moved his family to Fort Lauderdale in 1953 where he began his career in the private practice of internal medicine. He was an honorary member of the Rotary Club International, and a trustee of the First Congregational Church of Fort Lauderdale.
L.G. will be greatly missed by his wife of 59 years, Mabel, twins, Tom White and Jeanne Johnson; daughter, Peggy White, two granddaughters, Kristi Johnson and Sarah Johnson, and daughter-in-law Sheida White.
Friends may call on Wednesday, November 19 from 4.00 to 7:00 PM at Baird-Case Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home, 4343 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. A memorial service will be held in the First Congregational Church, NE 30th St., at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 20.

LaVere and Mabel are buried in Lauderdale Memorial Park - Mausoleum, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
