Leo Louis Wanninger, 71, of Manning died Friday, Oct. 20, 2006, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, Oct. 23, at Sacred Heart Church in Manning with the Rev. Father Andrew Hoffmann presiding.

Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak-Cutler Funeral Home of Omaha was in charge of arrangements.


A son of Wolfgang and Mary (Skalla) Wanninger, he was born December 19, 1934, in Lincoln Township in Audubon County, graduated from Gray High School in 1952 then farmed with his father.

Mr. Wanninger entered the Army in 1954. Basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, was followed by cook's school at Fort Riley, Kan. In May 1955 he was sent to Germany with the 1st Infantry Division, Co. D, 16th Infantry Regiment (The Big Red 1), Home of the Rangers. He was honorably discharged in 1956 from the 585th ORD Com (RC). While in the service he was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and Marksman (M-1) Sharpshooter (Carbine) Award.

After returning to the states he farmed for 33 years and did custom corn shelling. He also worked for Schwaller TV in Templeton doing antenna work.

He and Janice Laurinat were married September 7, 1957, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning. They had five children.

Mr. Wanninger was a member of the Manning Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Janice, of Manning; two sons: Martin Wanninger of Audubon and Michael Wanninger and wife Heather of Mahomet, Illinois; three daughters: Jean Gourley and husband Keith of Omaha, Nebraska; Joan Phillips and husband Dave of Golden, Colorado; and Janet Obrecht and husband Bruce of Glenwood; 11 grandchildren: Katie Herring of Omaha, Paige and Megan McKern of Glenwood, Elin and Natalie Phillips of Golden; Joey, John and Jacob Wanninger of Mahomet, Adam Obrecht of Glenwood, Jason Gourley and wife Denise of Arlington, Texas, and Josh Gourley and wife Tara of Omaha; a great-grandson; two sisters: Evelyn Irwin of Miami Lakes, Florida, and Rita Misselhorn of Robbinsdale, Minnesota; and three brothers-in-law: Allen Laurinat and wife Mary of Odessa, Mo., Harold Olson Jr. of Manilla and Jack Irwin of Miami Lakes.

Mr. Wanninger was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Joseph and Bernard Wanninger.
