He distinguished himself in all sports at Manning High with honors. The love of sports stayed with him as a powerful trait throughout his life. With a basketball scholarship at Drake University, his college career began. He finished his accounting degree at the University of Michigan through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Program in 1945.
Manning beckoned him back for the very good reason to be united in marriage to Eleanor Renee Sutherland on June 15, 1947. Lyle and Ellie moved to West Des Moines to which union two girls were born: Nancy Renee Schrum (Urbandale) and Susan Diane Davis (Adel).
Lyle demonstrated the epitome of steadfastness and stability working for Hawkeye Security Insurance Company, Des Moines, Iowa, for 40 years, retiring as Senior Vice President. He not only found his niche but carved it out as well, as the computer age dawned. Lyle rode the crest of the wave - designing and building computer systems that put Hawkeye at the very forefront of the insurance industry. And the insurance world noticed and wanted the same cutting edge computer technology, data processes, and success. Lyle took the ball and ran with his success traveling the world sharing his leadership and computer knowledge with the industry.

In retirement Lyle and Ellie spent winters in Florida where they played golf and enjoyed the warm climate. They enjoyed many travel vacations around the world.
Lyle never forgot his Manning, Iowa, roots and how sports gave him the opportunities for success through his college sport scholarship. Lyle and Ellie gave to numerous Manning fund raisers.
