Leland H. Kienast

1933 - 1999


Leland enlisted in the Army May 5, 1953, and took his training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was a Combat Construction Specialist receiving the National Defense Service Medal during his two-year stint in the Army. On May 5, 1955, Leland transferred to the Army Reserve Iowa Military District where he served until May 15, 1961, when he was honorably discharged, achieving the rank of Corporal E-4.

Leland H. Kienast was born May 4, 1933, son of Mr. & Mrs. John Kienast. He was educated in the Manning Schools graduating in 1950. He enlisted in the army May 5, 1953 and took his training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. On May 5, 1955, Leland transferred to the Army Reserve, Iowa Military District, there he served until May 15, 1961. He was honorably discharged at that time having achieved the rank of Corporal E-4. Leland passed away on May 12, 1999. Leland was married to Genelle (Kruse) Kienast until July 11, 1994 when Genelle passed away. He then married Marla Lamaack Nissen Kienast in March 1995. Leland and Genelle had two sons; Tim L. Kienast and Bary J. Kienast both residents of Manning along with their families.

Funeral services for Leland H. Kienast were held Sunday, May 16, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. Pastor Daniel Vogel officiated the service with Fern Jensen as organist.

Interment was held in Manning Cemetery, Manning, Iowa with Don Ringgenberg, Russ Mohr, Duane Monson, Warren Puck, Floyd Forman and Dennis Backhaus as casket bearers.

Leland Herman, the youngest of six sons of John and Emma Braun Kienast, was born May 4, 1933 near Gray in Audubon County, Iowa. On June 18, 1933, he was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church near Audubon and on March 30, 1947 he was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Leland attended country school and graduated from Manning Community High School with the class of 1950.

On March 29, 1953, Leland was united in marriage with Genelle Kruse at Zion Lutheran Church. Two sons were born to this union. From 1953 to 1955, Leland served in the United States Army as a combat construction specialist with the 52nd Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After returning to Iowa, Leland and Genelle farmed near Botna until 1968 when they moved to the present farm southwest of Manning. Genelle passed away on July 11, 1994.

On March 18, 1995, Leland was united in marriage with Marla Nissen at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Leland was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, holding various church offices. He was also a member of the Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion in Manning. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, fishing, working in his shop, being with his grandchildren, following the Manning Bull-dogs and Iowa State Cyclones. He thoroughly enjoyed farming and raising cattle.

In 1992, Leland was diagnosed with cancer and in March of 1998 his health began to fail. On Thursday, May 13, 1999, Leland died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. He reached the age of 66 years and 9 days.

Besides his first wife, Genelle, he was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Harvey Kienast and Gilbert Kienast.

Leland is survived by his wife Marla Kienast of Manning; two sons: Tim Kienast and his wife, Joni of Manning; Bary Kienast and his wife, Karen, of Manning; five grandchildren: Jill, Stacie, Jessica, Brooke and Jason Kienast; one step-son Brian Nissen, of Manning; three brothers: Elmer Kienast and his wife, Audrey, of Arion; Maynard Kienast and his wife, Eleanor, of Indianola; and LeRoy Kienast and his wife, Donna Rae, of Long Beach, California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
