Manning Senior to Enter Army Service

John Keane, senior in high school here, has enlisted in the army for two years, according to recruiting officers visiting Manning each Thursday.
Under provisions of the service act, Keane will be entitled to 36 months' college work, equivalent to four years; receive $500 tuition and $65 per month subsistence.
Other young men interested in this program may contact recruiting officers each Thursday as they visit Manning. Headquarters are at the post office.


John Dennis Keane

John Dennis Keane, 92 of Deland, Florida, passed away on January 19, 2021. He was born on October 15, 1928 in Newton, Iowa, to parents George C. Keane and Caroline H. (Stammer) Keane-Clark. John lived his early years in Manning, Iowa. He graduated from Manning High School in 1946, and went on to graduate from the University of Iowa, College of Business, in Iowa City.

John also served in the U.S Army during the Korean War.

He worked for thirty years as a Marketing Representative for IBM, the last 17 years as the team leader handling John Deere & Company, worldwide.

After early retirement from IBM, he worked as Vice President of Davenport Bank & Trust, Davenport, Iowa, which is now Wells Fargo Bank Iowa.

John and his family lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Waterloo, Iowa; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Moline, Illinois; as he pursued his career with IBM.

After retirement he and his wife have lived in Pompano Beach, Port St. Lucie and Orange City, Florida.

He was married to Mary Ellen (Colbert) Keane in Iowa City in 1950. John is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Keane; son, James Keane; parents and stepfather.

He is survived by his son Mark Keane, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. John was a member of several golf clubs as he moved to various cities.

He was also active in Rotary, Boy Scouts and United Way. His consummate avocation was bicycle touring and he was an active member of Quad Cities Bicycle Club. He has ridden his bicycle across the U.S, across a portion of Australia and on bicycle tours across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. There is an annual bicycle tour across Iowa (RAGBRAI) and John rode it thirty times.

Mary Ellen Colbert, daughter of Mrs. Delphine Colbert of Iowa City, and John D. Keane, son of Mrs. Caroline Keane of Manning, were united in marriage at St. Mary's church in Iowa City at 10:00 a.m. on June 10.
Rev. Father Schmitz performed the double ring ceremony.
Mrs. Maria Durger was organist, and Mrs. Paul Kennedy sang "Ave Maria", "Panis Angelicus", and "Oh, Lord, I Am Not Worthy" during the service.
The bride was given in marriage by her brother, Clayton Colbert.
She was attired in white nylon marquisette over taffeta, with a yoke of net and seed pearls and junior train. She wore a fingertip veil and orange blossom tiara. Her flowers were white gladoli.
Genevieve Colbert, sister of the bride, acted as maid of honor. Her gown was frosted white organdy over taffeta, with a yellow set in sash, and a braided yellow net head dress. She carried lavender gladoli.
The bride's mother was gowned in navy sheer with pink accessories. The groom's mother wore a teal blue suit with white accessories.
Orren Welch of Manning acted as the groom's attendant. Eldon Mackert of Dubuque, Eugene Porter of Marshalltown and Edward Colbert of Iowa City were ushers.
Dinner for 65 guests was served following the ceremony at the D & L Dining Room in Iowa City. Decorations were of white and yellow gladioli, centered by a five tier wedding cake.
The bride is a graduate of Mercy Hospital School of Nursing at Iowa City, and the groom graduated from the College of Commerce, University of Iowa.
He is associated with Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity.
Mrs. Keane has been employed on the surgical staff at Mercy Hospital and Mr. Keane will be employed in the credit department of Penick and Ford, Ltd. at Cedar Rapids.
