Karl Mahnke
Karl John Julius, son of Julius and Emma (Dubberke)
Mahnke, was born just outside of Arcadia, Iowa, on August 8, 1926. He attended
school in Arcadia until his junior year when his family purchased a farm by
Manilla. Karl finished his schooling and graduated from Manilla in 1944.
After his schooling Karl enlisted with the Army Air Corps and was given an honorable discharge at the end of World War II. Returning to the family farm, Karl farmed with his father, and, in 1949, married Donna Jane Schacht on September 21, in Pierre, South Dakota. The couple farmed the family farm until 1966 when Karl took a job in town. He continued to raise pigs for 12 more years. Karl retired from his manager's job in 1986. He and Donna continued to live on the farm until 1993 when Donna moved to the Manning Plaza due to health problems and passed away in 1999.
Karl moved to the Plaza on November 2, 2000, and later entered Manning Regional Healthcare Center, Manning, Iowa, where he passed away on November 20, 2000. He was 74 years, 3 months, and 12 days of age.
Karl was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and Post 132 of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, visiting with friends, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
He is survived by his daughter Shiree and her husband Todd; two grandchildren; and a brother-in-law Jack Kuns of Templeton; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
