Kenneth Boell

1998-2000 American Legion commander


Kenneth Boell, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Boell, served in the U.S. National Guard from March of 1964 to March of 1970.
In April 1964, Kenneth Boell enlisted in the Iowa National Guard, 34th Division. He took basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and took advanced training for ammunitions at Fort Carson, Colorado.
During his service he trained and worked at different ammunition depots: Camp Ripley in Minnesota; Camp McCoy in Wisconsin; Savannas, Illinois; and Red River Arsenal at Texarkana, Texas.
Kenneth was also a member of the Mechanized Infantry.
Kenneth obtained the rank of Specialist 4th class and received his honorable discharge on April 1970.

Kenneth Duane, son of Paul and Helen (Baumhover) Boell, was born February 3, 1943, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll. He grew up near Manilla, attending country school at Hayes Township No. 8 and graduating from Manning High School in 1961. Kenny then farmed with his family.

From 1964 to 1970, Kenny served with the Iowa National Guard as an Ammunition Specialist, with schooling at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Fort Carson, Colorado.

On February 9, 1968, Kenny was united in marriage with Cherryl Anderson at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. Six children were born to this marriage. The couple farmed the family farm near Manilla and Kenny worked on other farms in the area and in construction. He retired from Crawford County after 24 years of service.

Kenny was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and American Legion Post 22 in Manning where he was active with the Ceremonial Team and as Past-commander. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, traveling, and American history.

Kenny died at Amelia Place in Council Bluffs on June 13, 2019, at the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 10 days.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Cherryl, in 2018; parents Paul and Helen Boell; brothers Robert Boell and Louis Boell; and his father-in-law Albert Anderson.

Kenny is survived by his six children: Lisa (Arnold) Swanson of Council Bluffs; James Boell of Mineola, Marcy Boell and Curtis Boell, both of Harlan; Angie (Dave) Voyna of Grimes; and Kenneth Jr. (Jen) Boell of Manilla; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother Richard Boell of Denison; a sister Ella Mae Muenchow of Arcadia; his mother-in-law Goldie Anderson of Nevada, Iowa; a brother-in-law Jerry (Allison) Anderson of Ames; and by many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
