49 Selectees Leave; Nine Married Men
First Time Carroll County Has Called Any Number Of Married Registrants

Forty-nine selectees left Carroll at 5:30 this morning by charter bus for the Camp Dodge Induction Station, Des Moines. These selectees will be inducted into various branches of the armed forces. They will return home this evening after being placed in the reserve status for a period of two weeks before leaving for further assignment.

8 Volunteers
Eight of this number are volunteers, but are required to go through the regular process of induction. They are: Philip Mon. who has enlisted in the Seabees: Charles Moates in Class V-12 of the Navy; John Drees and Morris Ehen, both in the Air Corps, and Wayne Harriott, Larimer Hanby, Arthur Behneman, and Carl Shoemaker, volunteers for induction. This is the first time that a sizeable part (9 men) of the call has been made up of married men - that is, men who were married before the Selective Service Training Act of 1940, was passed and have no children born prior to the fall of 1942. Carroll County is one of the few counties in Iowa that has withheld the drafting of married men until this time.

The last four named in the list below are transfers to this board from other boards: Jack Encell, transferring from Calhoun County Local Board No. 1, Grand Island, Nebraska; Walter W. Feld, from Calhoun County Local Board No. 3, Battle Creek, Nebraska, Harley E. Stuhr, from Los Angeles County Board No. 231, Los Angeles, California; and John R. Scanlan, from Polk County Local Board No. 5 Des Moines, Iowa.

Frederick G. Winter, formerly of Carroll and a registrant of this board called for induction, has requested transfer to the Cass County Local Board at Atlantic.

Breakfast Served
Breakfast was served by the American Legion Auxiliary at the Elks Hall before the selectees left for the induction center. F.H. Cooney gave a short address before the group.
