James enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 1967 at Iowa City, Iowa. He served at Fort Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Sam Houston, Texas, and was then transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve in Chicago, Illinois. Specialist First Class Hansen was discharged in 1973.
