James Orrin Barnes
Lieutenant Colonel, retired, James Orrin Barnes, 76, passed away on May 7, 2003.

Born in Manning, Iowa, November 30, 1928, he was the son of Lloyd and Elsie (Duede) Barnes. He attended Manning Schools. One brother, Wayne Barnes, served in the Army during WWII, died in 1987, and another older brother, Gordon, and a sister Loa, all of whom attended Manning Schools.

Survived by his wife, Earline, sons Richard and Douglas Barnes, daughters Kathleen Hale, Karen Castillo, and Kimberley Vandagriff, grandchildren Juan Carlos and Ozuki Castro, Chose Hale, Veronica Mitchell, Belindo Yates, Lee Barnes, and Kenneth and Christopher Vandagriff; great-grandchildren Ashley Yates, Maya, and Aaron Mitchell and Yaranely Castro.

Colonel Barnes served our country from 1948 to 1970 in the U S. Army. His last tour of duty was as USARV Inspector General in Vietnam. His numerous military commendations include the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a graduate of Class 18, Army Officer Regiment, Fort Riley, Kansas, and attended the University of Maryland and San Francisco University.

Over the post thirty years, he served our city on the El Paso Water Utilities Advisory Board, founded the Paso Del Norte Food Bonk and was President of the Canutillo Independent School District Board and Board Member for 12 years. He received numerous awards and citations, including the City of El Paso Conquistador Award, for his involvement and leadership in city programs.

Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, May 12th in Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Shriner's Hospital Canutillo.
