Harold William Schmidt
Harold was drafted into the United States Marine Corps September 22, 1945. He trained at the Marine Corps Training Station in San Diego, California.
Pfc. Schmidt was honorably discharged September 25, 1946. Harold was a very active member of the American Legion Emil Ewoldt Post 22 and of their drill team,
and a Commander from 1982 to 1983.

Harold William, son of Henry and Mamie (Opperman) Schmidt, was born May 1, 1927, in Manning, Iowa. He attended school in Manning and graduated with the class of 1945.
In 1945, Harold was drafted into the United States Marine Corps and served in California until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to Iowa where he attended Iowa State University and Parsons College. Harold then worked for the Soil Conservation Service for two years. He returned to the Manning area and began farming. He completed his business degree at Midwestern College in Denison.
On August 16, 1953, Harold was united in marriage with Gladys Sawtell in Gilbert, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. Harold and Gladys made their home on Harold's home place north of Manning where they have resided for 50 years. In 1970, Harold and Gladys purchased the H&R Block Income Tax business in Carroll, which they operated for nearly 30 years.
Harold was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning where he served as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher and on a Presbytery Committee and did pulpit supply. Harold was a very active member of the American Legion Emil Ewoldt Post 22 and of their drill team. He was a Past Master and 50 year member of Manual Lodge #450 A.F. and A.M., a member of York Rite, the Scottish Rite, and Shrine. He was a Past Patron and 50 year member of Salona Chapter OES. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Weihnachtsfest Committee and the Manning Heritage Foundation Board. This past year he was elected a Commissioner of the Carroll Soil and Water Conservation District. Harold enjoyed the challenge of fixing mechanical equipment and working in his shop.
On Wednesday, October 15, 2003, Harold died at Clarkson Towers Burn Unit in Omaha, Nebraska, following an accident in his shop the previous day. He was 76 years, 5 months, and 15 days of age.
Harold is survived by his wife Gladys Schmidt of Manning; children: Richard Schmidt and wife Carol of Manning; Bonnie Schmidt of Oklahoma City; Michael Schmidt and wife Barb of Denison; Robert Schmidt and wife Sharon of Manning; grandchildren: Daymon and Nolan Schmidt & Shala and Kali Schmidt; great-grandson Rylan; step grandchildren: Chris and husband Kevin Brown of Manning; Dan Cantrell and wife Glenda of Harlan; Jill Enenbach of Elk Horn; seven step great grandchildren; three step great-great-grandchildren; brother Glen Schmidt and wife Beverly of Columbus, Ohio; sister Ruth and husband Allan Eich of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
