Mass of the Christian burial will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, January 7th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville with burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery near Lohrville. Visitation with his family will start at 5:00 pm Wednesday, January 6th, at the church with a Vigil for the Decease held at 6:30 pm.

Alvin M. Haberl, the son of Bernard and Genevieve (Daniel) Haberl, was born February 16, 1929, in Manning, Iowa, and departed this life January 1, 2016, at the Gowrie Care Center in Gowrie. He lived a full life to the age of 86 years, 10 months and 15 days.

On April 14, 1953, Alvin Haberl was united in marriage to Rita Bierl at St. Francis Catholic Church in Maple River, Iowa. Six children were born to this union. After their marriage, Alvin and Rita moved to the Lohrville area where Alvin worked for a local farmer. They later farmed on their own farm and raised their family. In 1975, Alvin quit farming and did custom work. Alvin and Rita moved to Farnhamville and Alvin worked for the Churdan Feeder Pig operation until the mid-80s. He then worked at the Iowa State University Research Hog Facility until his retirement in the mid-90s. Alvin and Rita moved back to Lohrville where they lived until July of 2007 when Alvin became a resident of the Gowrie Care Center.

Alvin was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville. Alvin served in the United States Army in combat in Korea during the Korean War. He served several years as president of the Lohrville Senior Citizen's Organization. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and building things with his hands such as small trains built out of tin. His lifelong interest was working with livestock and even after his retirement, he would help on the farm with the livestock.

Alvin is survived by his six children and their spouses; David (Becky) of Jolley, Gary (Pam) of Lohrville, Alan (Sue) of Nevada, Diane (Dave) Mundt of Callendar, Cindy (Bob) Hoffman of Ames and Marcia (Bill) James of San Antonio, Texas, 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, five brothers: Don (Mary Ann) Haberl of Maple River, Bernie (Jay) Haberl of Ames, Erv (Mary Jane) Haberl of Maple River, LeRoy (Carol) Haberl of Carroll and Ed (Annette) Haberl of Carroll and three sisters: Darlene (Leo) Willenborg of Manning, Rita Ann (Art) Bruch of Arcadia and Norma Jean Antopher of Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rita in August of 2015, great-grandson, Jaiden Drake, brother Marlind Haberl and sister Joleen Bauer.

Mass of the Christian burial was held Thursday, January 7, 2016, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville with Rev. Father Lynn Bruch officiating. Burial was made in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery near Lohrville. Musical selections, "How Great Thou Art", "On Eagle's Wings", "Amazing Grace" and "Here I am Lord" were sang by the church choir and accompanied by organist Donny Hobbs. Military honors were conducted at the church.

Casket bearers were his grandsons; Chad Haberl, Ben Haberl, Matt Haberl, Brian Mundt, Travis Mundt, James Hoffman and Keith James. Honorary bearers were his granddaughters; Jean Anderson, Jami Haberl, Nicole Drake, Brenda Haberl, Angela Haberl, Sarah Haberl, Amy Kaufman, Megan James and Molly James.

A Vigil for the Deceased was held at 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church led by Rev. Father Lynn Bruch.
