CARD OF THANKS
I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to the Senior Class, basketball squad and faculty of Manning high school for the splendid gifts presented me as a remembrance when I enter the services of the U. S. army, Jan. 31st.
This gesture on the part of the above groups will always remain in my memory.
Howard Schumann. 1945

Thanks From Howard Schumann
Camp Hood, Texas, February 18, 1945.
Legion Post, and Monitor Staff:
I wish to take these few minutes time to let you know I have received my first issue of the Monitor, and never before in my life was there such a desire to find out the news of the happenings around the one, and only, town of Manning.

So again I want to express my thanks to the Monitor, Legion, and all people concerned in seeing that 11 servicemen receive the "Home Town Paper."
Thank you.
Yours respectfully, Howard Schumann.

Howard Schumann Tells of Life at Camp Howze
June 29, 1945.
Legion and Monitor:
I am going to drop you a few lines to let you know of my change of address.
My new address is Pvt. Howard Schumann, Co. "A", 49 I.A.T.B., 13 ITR (Barracks 5), Camp Howze, Tex.

Camp Howze is located seven miles from the town of Gainesville, Texas, which is right near the Oklahome border. In fact from where I am writing now, I can throw a stone into Oklahoma.
Something about Camp Howze, compared to Camp Hood, it isn't as pretty or near as neatly arranged.

We have old coal stoves in each barracks instead of the gas or electric stoves which we were used to. The barracks are made of black tar paper, so you can see, they would seem kind of dreary. In fact, when we first came here and the driver said to one of the boys, "here is your camp," the boy replied, "looks more like a prison than an army camp."
Our training which will last from six to fifteen weeks, will be of advanced infantry training, or the same as marine training.

I guess it is getting time for me to sign off. So I am going to say hello to my friends, and am looking forward to the Monitor. Thanks a million. Sincerely, Howie.
