Harold Rutz Transferred
Harold, F. Rutz, G. M. 3/c, U.S.C.G. has just completed a 6 weeks "Pre-Commissioning" training and special course in gunnery at the Naval operating Base, Norfolk, Virginia.
He will soon receive additional training at Manhattan Beach training station, Brooklyn.


Harold Rutz Completes Course
Harold F. Rutz,. U.S.C.G. G.M. 3c, 128 Hyland Ave., Ames, Iowa has completed a special course in anti-aircraft artillery maintenance at the Pontiac Ordnance School at Pontiac, Michigan, January 19th.
He is now being transferred. Harold is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rutz of Manning.

Harold F. Rutz, 87, passed away May 29, 2004 at his home. Generous in death as well as in life, he chose to deed his body to the University of Iowa medical research. No funeral is planned and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Harold was born in Manning on September 14, 1916 to Fred and Rosa Rutz. As a young man, he played semi-pro basketball. During WW II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard and was deployed in the Mediterranean with the North Atlantic escort and submarine patrol. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Science Degrees from Iowa State University. After graduation, Harold taught industrial education for 31 years, the last 25 at the Des Moines Technical High School.

As a man of faith, Harold did myriad tasks for his church, such as a Sunday school superintendent, a catechism teacher and handyman. His love of carpentry and of music were important in his life. He was named a Des Moines Register "Neighbor of the Week," and believed that anyone in need was his neighbor.

Mr. Rutz's memory is honored by his beloved wife of 61 years, Norma of Des Moines; his son, Timothy of Des Moines; and his daughter, Deborah and her husband George Gay of Texas. He will be missed by his sister, Margery Mintle of Iowa City; a brother, Burton of Cedar Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Doris Rutz of Manning, Donna Adams of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Dickinson of Oskaloosa; a brother-in-law, Burton Dickinson and his wife, Pat of CT; many cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and a host of loving friends, neighbors and honorary family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Amos; his daughter-in-law, Roxana; and four brothers-in-law, Max Mintle, Wayne Dickinson, Leroy Adams and Dale Dickinson.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa or to his church, Our Savior Lutheran.
