He was a graduate of Manning High School and served stateside in the 82nd airborne division of the U.S. Army Paratroopers.
He farmed in Crawford County, near Denison, until 1966 when he moved to Burlington.
There he worked for a time as a millwright at I.A.A.P. He then worked at Exide in
equipment service for 16 1/2 years until retiring in March of 1990.
Kienast was married to Barbara Blythe at Burlington on January 17, 1987. He was an
active member of Concordia Lutheran Church. He served as publicity officer for the
Lutheran Brotherhood River Cities service branch and was a lifetime member of the
Missouri Synod Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter and one brother.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Burlington; three daughters: Vickie Kongable of
Mt. Union, Linda Virgin of Burlington, Lori Lewis of Illinois; two sons, Ronald and John,
both of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Debbie Wadden of Keokuk, and Linda Vargas of
Virginia; two step-sons, Trent Blythe of Minnesota and Craig Schmoldt of Maryland; nine
grandchildren, 13 stepgrandchildren, two step-greatgrandchildren, and four brothers:
Elmer of Arion, Maynard of Indianola, LeRoy of Long Beach, California and Leland of
Manning.
A memorial has been established at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Burlington, Iowa.
