Gerald G. Schreck


Gerald enlisted in the USAF, March 28, 1951. After serving one year, he entered the Aviation Cadet Program. He was commissioned a 2/LT and awarded pilot wings on May 1, 1953. He served in Labrador and Texas before leaving the Air Force in 1956. He and his wife returned to Creighton University where he completed college and Dental School, graduating in 1962. After two years of private practice, they re-entered active military duty with the U.S. Army Dental Corps. After several stateside and overseas assignments in South Vietnam and Korea, Gerald retired as an orthodontist September 1982 with the rank of Colonel. During his military career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, two awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, three awards of the Army Commendation and the Army Achievement Medal.

Doris is the daughter of Effie (Friedrichsen) and Nelson Christensen.
Her brother, Ray Christensen served during the Korean War, and her Uncle Dale Christensen was KIA during WWII.

Gerald George Schreck, "Doc" son of Louis and Clara (Heithoff) Schreck was born September 6, 1931, in Templeton, Carroll County, Iowa. Doc grew up in Templeton and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1949, then attended Creighton University until 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 - 1956, during the Korean Conflict.

On December 27, 1954, Doc was united in marriage with Doris Christensen at Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Eight children were born to this union. They lived in Omaha, NE from 1956 to 1962 while Doc again attended Creighton University, graduating from the School of Dentistry. They then moved to Carroll, Iowa from 1962 to 1964 where Doc was an associate of Doctors Barels, Langenfeld, and Westendorf in the practice of General Dentistry. He entered the U.S. Army Dental Corps in 1965 and served at several assignments, including a residency program in the specialty of Orthodontics from 1971 to 1973 at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and retired from the U.S. Army as an orthodontist with the rank of Colonel in September of 1982. The family thoroughly enjoyed the interesting life as a military family with several stateside and overseas assignments.

Doc and Doris retired in 1982 and returned to Templeton. They loved coming back their hometown area. He enjoyed traveling to many countries, visiting family, and making daily visits to the Corner Station. He thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Dedham American Legion, and a member of the V.F.W. in Manning. Doc and Doris just recently observed their 65th Anniversary.

Doc's health started deteriorating a few weeks ago and he died at home in Templeton, Iowa on Thursday, January 30, 2020. He was 88 years, 4 months, and 24 days of age.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Gerald Jr. Schreck; son Kevin Schreck in 2009; siblings: Leona (Bill) Horbach; Collette Schreck; Janet (Herb) Sextro; Elmer Schreck; and Dorothy (Melvin) Romey.

He is survived by his wife Doris Schreck of Templeton; children: Allen (Debbie) Schreck of Overland Park, Kansas; Timothy (Laure) Schreck of Ankeny; Stephen (Lori) Schreck of Weldon Spring, Missouri; Philip (Kristie) Schreck of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Annette Schreck of Tucson, Arizona; John (Darnell) Schreck of Ocean Springs, Mississippi; 15 grandchildren: Joshua (Ashley) Schreck; Tommy Schreck; Jessica (Austin) Neville; Amber Rosener; Lindsey Schreck; Jordan Schreck; Katelyn Harwell; Chris Schreck; Jake Schreck; Hannah Harwell; Samantha Schreck; Mattie Schreck; Erin Schreck; Luke Schreck; Gabe Schreck; 7 great-grandchildren: Brody Rosener; Journey Rosener; Tytan Rosener; Layton Schreck; Maisie Rae Schreck; Luke Harwell; and Lincoln Neville; daughter-in- law Karen (Dale) Derner of Carroll; sister in law Marie Schreck of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends.
