George was inducted into the Marines at Kansas City, Missouri, on July 9, 1945. He trained at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in Field Music. He was in the Drum and Bugle Corps and served as a bugler on board a ship in the Caribbean. He achieved the rank of FM1 (Field Music 1st Class) and received the Good Conduct Medal. George was discharged on July 27, 1946.
Interment was in Manning City Cemetery with members of the American Legion-VFW Ceremonial Squad as casketbearers. Ronnie Hiatt, Ken Fogleman, Allen Rix, Richard Crandall, Ray Ehlers and Charles Ehlers were honorary casketbearers. Military honors were by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517 and Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion.
George, son of Hans and Rose Marie Steen Pfoltner, was born August 10, 1922 at
Manning, Iowa. After the death of his mother he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Amanda
and Chris Pfoltner.
He was graduated from Manning High School in 1940.
George played cornet in many area dance bands including The Al Truhe Orchestra, The
Harmony Boys, and The Music Men.
On April 6, 1943 George was united in marriage with Jean Ohde at the Presbyterian
Church in Carroll. Three children, David, Patricia, and Brian, were born to this union.
George served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II as a bugler and he
also played in the Drum and Bugle Corps.
After returning from the service George farmed south of Aspinwall until the time of his
recent illness. He died early Monday morning, July 25, 1988 at Manning General Hospital
at the age of 65 years, 11 months, and 15 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his aunt and uncle, Chris and Amanda Pfoltner; and by two brothers-in-law, Russell Wallace and Herman Hagedorn. George is survived by his wife, Jean, of Manning; by his children: David and his wife, Donna, of Sheridan, Illinois; Patricia and her husband, James Dinklage, of Newport, Nebraska; and Brian and his wife, Mary, of Colby, Kansas; by four grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, Aaron, and Stephanie; by two sisters, Irene Hagedorn, of Omaha; and Helen Wallace, of Rockwell; by two aunts, Alma Schelldorf, of Manning and Louise Pfoltner, of Kansas City; and by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Manning resident George Pfoltner passed away Monday, July 25, 1988, at the Manning General Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 27, at the Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Interment will be at the Manning Cemetery with military honors. Visitation is after 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26.
