Military funeral rites for Eugene Joseph Espenhover, 24, 1967, were held at Sacred Heart Church in Manning on Wednesday morning, October 11 at 10 a.m. with burial in Holy Angels Cemetery in Roselle.

Son of Joe and Helen Turner Espenhover, he was born September 12, 1943, at Carroll, and attended rural schools and the Ar-We-Va schools. He worked on farms near Halbur and for two years at Valentine, Nebraska, entering military service in April, 1965. He was discharged from service on March 26, 1967, after spending some time in Alaska and since his return had been employed by John and Richard Hinners near Halbur.

Eugene lost his life in a car accident west of Manning on October 7. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

He is survived by his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Arden Hinners (Judy), Halbur; Duane, Kearney, Nebraska; David, Minden, Nebraska; Jane, Carroll; Mrs. Kenneth (Shirley) Vogl, Carroll; Helen, Joseph, Steve, Deborah, Carol, Cindy, Tom, Jerry, and Paul at home. Also his grandmothers: Mrs. Elizabeth Turner of Carroll and Mrs. Mary Espenhover, Fredericksburg, Texas.

Rosaries were prayed at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday evenings. Military rites were in charge of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts of Manning.

Westside man killed in one-car accident
Eugene Joseph Espenhover, 24, rural Westside, was killed Saturday about 5:15 p.m. after he attempted to pass another vehicle on Highway 141 west of Manning. He lost control of his auto, went down a ditch and struck the end of a concrete culvert. He died of neck injuries.

Passengers in the auto were Espenhover's father, Joseph H., 50, and a 12-year old brother, Steven Joseph, suffered from a fractured shoulder and head and face lacerations. Steven suffered lacerations and abrasions on his legs and bruises. They were treated at the Manning hospital and later transferred to Carroll.

Funeral services for Eugene Espenhover will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning with burial in the Holy Angels Cemetery in Roselle.

He is survived by his parents and 14 brothers and sisters.

This is the sixth traffic death on the county for the year, according to the highway Patrol.
