Zane was drafted into the United States Army on May 2, 1968. He received basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington and advanced individual training
at Fort Ord, California. Zane was assigned to Military Assistance Command in Vietnam near Siagon from October of 1968 to December of 1969.
He received an honorable discharge upon his return to the United States.
