Duane Spieker


Duane "Spike" Spieker was inducted into the Army at the Audubon County Local Board, Audubon, Iowa, on December 2, 1952.
He entered the service as a Private-E-1, completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and from there was sent to Korea where he served 13 months. He achieved an Expert Marksman rating and advanced quickly in rank, due largely to his skills in diagnosing and repairing military vehicles. Duane achieved his highest rank when he was promoted to Sergeant First Class (Technical), E-7, on April 21, 1954.
After leaving Korea, he was transferred to Fort Riley, Kansas, where he served as Wire Chief, Headquarters Battery for the 10th Division-Artillery. He earned a Korean War Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was Honorably Discharged from active duty December 1, 1954, and from the U.S. Army Standby Reserve December 1, 1960.



In Memory of Duane Spieker

Duane Anthony "Spike" Spieker died Monday, June 24, 2013, from complications due to cancer. He passed peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born to Lawrence and Viola Spieker, July 13, 1932, in Carroll, Iowa, was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and married his wife Audrey December 29, 1956.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Shawnee, Kansas. He spent his career at and retired as a supervisor from Honeywell FM&T, Kansas City. He was an avid motorcyclist and tractor enthusiast, and enjoyed many great friendships in the ROMEO riding club, the Greater Kansas City Area Two Cylinder Club, and other groups.

His father, Lawrence, wife, Audrey, and sister, Norma, preceded him in death. He is survived by his mother, Viola Spieker, of Manning, Iowa; brothers Jerry, Paul, Butch, Larry and Randy; sisters Rosie Vollstedt, Marilyn Popp, Carol Kral, Karen Wegner and Donna Mohr; children David (Nancy), Shawnee (Kansas), Debbie Carter (Kevin), Kansas City, Kansas, Susie Richardson (Dave), Shawnee, Lori Meyer (Joe), Shawnee, Brian, Shawnee, Diane, Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Stacy, Shawnee; 18 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.


Some more historical notes:
Duane grew up on a farm outside of Templeton/Manning. His parents (Lawrence and Viola Spieker) sold their farm in 1970 and retired in Manning. Duane graduated from Sacred Heart before being drafted and serving in Korea (1953). As of March 2015, his mother, Viola, is the eldest resident of Manning Plaza at 104.
