Dan entered the U.S. Army on July 15, 1970, completing his ten-week basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He served the rest of his active service at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he served as a training clerk, and Courts and Boards Clerk for the 1st Engineer Battalion. He was separated from active duty on January 18, 1972.
