Donald Hodne served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1958 to 1961 in the Pacific Fleet, Reconnaissance Division.

Donald Dean, son of Arlo and Thelma (Ramsey) Hodne, was born September 20, 1940, on a farm south of Manning, Iowa. He attended rural schools and then Manning High School.

Don served in the U.S. Marine Corp from 1958 to 1961 in the Pacific Fleet, Reconnaissance Division. Don was united in marriage with Connie Sahl on February 10, 1963. Three children were born to this union. He lived and farmed for a time on a farm south of Manilla before moving to Manilla. Don worked at Farmland Foods, as an electrician for several area electrical companies, as a policeman for the city of Manilla and in maintenance at Crawford County Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and very active in the local AA group.

Don enjoyed gardening, making his famous spaghetti, fishing and camping. Whether live, on television or the radio, he was a fan of a variety of sports, including Iowa State University and the Minnesota Vikings. However Don's greatest joy was watching his grandchildren play sports.

Don became a resident of the Manilla Manor in 2004 following a serious injury and other health concerns. He was transferred to Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Friday, January 7th and died there on Sunday, January 9, 2011, at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 20 days.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Arlo LaRue Hodne; brother-in-law Jack Lakers; and granddaughter Katherine Bissen.

Don is survived by his children: Trent and wife Lisa Hodne of Manilla; Jill and husband Delbert Bissen of Defiance; and Amy and husband Shawn Corbin of Clive; 7 grandchildren: Larissa Hodne; T.J. Hodne; Matt Bissen; Derek Hodne; Daniel Hodne; Connor Corbin; Caleb Corbin; great grandson Phoenix Hodne; sister Jan Lakers of Irwin; brother Ron and wife Sally Hodne of Manning; sister-in-law Shirley Hodne of Omaha; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
